Europe Braces for Trump-Putin Summit

Sep 5, 2024
European and Ukrainian leaders are expressing concern as a summit between U.S. President Trump and Russian President Putin is set to take place. The primary fear is that the two leaders may agree on a peace deal for Ukraine without the direct involvement of Ukrainian officials, potentially leading to land concessions that would favor Russia. While Trump has reportedly assured European leaders that he will prioritize a ceasefire, both Ukraine and its allies insist that any peace terms must be agreed upon with Kyiv's participation. The European Union and NATO are wary that any outcome could tacitly acknowledge Russian control of Ukrainian territory and set a dangerous precedent for future aggression.
